How far will they go to succeed in their mission?On the face of it, ‘Country Mafia’ is a revenge saga, but as the episodes unfold, it unleashes every possible trope of a dark political thriller set in the heartland of India. Chausa in Bihar is besieged by illegal liquor Mafia, after the ban on it and the thriving businesses has created monsters out of these unscrupulous businessmen. Leading among them is Babban (Ravi Kishan) – a man who can go to any lengths to achieve his nefarious goals. Be it slicing a man’s throat dug deep into the ground or blatantly showing off his chauvanstic side. He also has a Godman-on-call Mahant (Satish Kaushik), for some ill-advice and divine intervention. But his unholy crimes set him up against a determined family led by its fiery matriach Mamta (Anita Raaj), who is baying for his blood.

It’s a good juicy plot that gives ample scope for a lot gunfire, gore and goons. Something that we have seen far too often on various OTT platforms (like ‘Mirzapur’, ‘Arya’) before it was famously turned into a cult on the silver screen by Anurag Kashyap with the ‘Gangs of Waseypur’ series. So, now the first and formost challenge here is that the series has set itself against some pretty lofty standards and hence the comparisons are inevitable. While there is constant action in every episode, the execution is so dark that it makes sitting through a series of episodes a chore. Besides, there is touch of newness in the narrative, the overall screenplay is one that feels familiar.
